I blogged about the food pyramid a few days ago, so I'll bring it up again. Apparently this was its most recent incarnation, but as of yesterday it's been scrapped!
The new icon expresses the greater importance of fruits and veggies!
Here it is -- not perfect, but an improvement, with fruits and veggies taking up half the plate!
It is very similar to the Power Plate recommended by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (who advocate that health professionals should teach people real facts about nutrition and disease, not just what they want to hear or what big business dictates).
The meat and dairy industries have a good thing going ... look how much of government subsidies they get relative to fruits and vegetable producers (who should be providing half of our plates)!
They're also protected by food slander laws. It's illegal in 13 states (Texas included) to "denigrate or criticize food products." (So yes, I have probably been breaking the law here -- don't turn me in!) Remember when the beef industry sued Oprah for stating that she'd never eat another hamburger? It seems to be true that instead of providing us with healthy, natural food, the powers-that-be prefer to take away our right to question the healthfulness of what we're eating.
Enough of that rant. Today Gabe, Max and I took our walk wearing hats.
Max's hat a bit too big (looking even bigger with the stretch effect of my camera)!
And Gabe's a bit too small.
Birthday parties tomorrow. Gabe is excited to find out what's inside this great big box!
